LIst all of the factors of 12 and 18. Then find the unique factors and multiple them.

the factors of 12 are $2 \times 2 \times 3$ or ${2}^{2} \times 3$

the factors of 18 are $2 \times 3 \times 3$ or $2 \times {3}^{2}$

There are two 2's in 12 and one 2 in 18 so the GCF must have one 2's

There are two 3's in 18 and one 3 in 12 so the GCF must have one 3's

So the GCG is $2 \times 3$ =6
