How do you simplify (0.10 x 10^5)(4.9 x 10^-2)?

It is easiest if you multiply the coefficients together and then the exponents (and finally normalize).

$\left(0.10 \times {10}^{5}\right) \left(4.9 \times {10}^{- 2}\right)$

$= \left(0.10 \times 4.9\right) \left({10}^{5} \times {10}^{- 2}\right)$

$= 0.49 \times {10}^{3}$

$= 4.9 \times {10}^{2}$
