# How do you simplify (2.548times10^5)/(2.8times10^-2)?

Feb 28, 2017

Shown with a lot of detail and trying not to use a calculator.

$9.1 \times {10}^{6}$

#### Explanation:

Note that 1/(10^(-2) is the same as ${10}^{2}$

So now we have:

$\frac{2.548}{2.8} \times {10}^{5} \times {10}^{2} \text{ "=" } \frac{2.548}{2.8} \times {10}^{7}$

Do not like decimals so lets get rid of them. For the moment disregard the ${10}^{7}$

$\textcolor{g r e e n}{\frac{2.548}{2.8} \textcolor{red}{\times 1} \text{ "->" "2.548/2.8color(red)(xx1000/1000)" "=" } \frac{2548}{2800}}$

Putting it all together we have:

$\frac{2548}{2800} \times {10}^{7}$

$\frac{91}{100} \times {10}^{7}$

$\frac{9.1}{10} \times {10}^{7}$

$9.1 \times {10}^{7} / 10$

$9.1 \times {10}^{6}$
