x = y - 11 . Substitute x by (y - 11) into equation 2.

x - 3y = 1 -> (y - 11) - 3y = 1 -> -2y = 12 -> $y = -6$ --> $x = -6 - 11 = -17$ .

Check:
$x - 3y = 1 -> -17 -(-3(6)) = -17 + 18 = 1$ OK.
