Solution: $x = \frac{6}{13} , y = - 9 \frac{4}{13}$

8 x- y = 13 (1) ; 5 x+ y = -7 (2) Adding equations (1) and (2)

we get $13 x = 6 \therefore x = \frac{6}{13}$ Putting $x = \frac{6}{13}$ in equation (1)

we get , $8 \cdot \frac{6}{13} - y = 13 \mathmr{and} y = \frac{48}{13} - 13 \mathmr{and} y = \frac{48 - 169}{13}$ or

$y = - \frac{121}{13} = - 9 \frac{4}{13}$
