# How do you solve the following system: x + 8y = 15 , 2x + 5y= 2 ?

Dec 30, 2015

x = $- \frac{169}{11}$
y = $\frac{28}{11}$

#### Explanation:

x + 8y = 15 --------------(1)
2x + 5y = 2 -------------(2)

Multiply equation (1) by 2, we get

2x + 16y = 30 ----------(3)

subtract equation 2 from equation 3 we get,

11y = 28

y = $\frac{28}{11}$

substitute in equation in 1
x + 8($\frac{28}{11}$) = 15

x+ $\frac{224}{11}$ = 15

x= 15- $\frac{224}{11}$

x = $\frac{55 - 224}{11}$

x= $- \frac{169}{11}$
