How do you tell a rock from a mineral?

I know that rocks are made of minerals, but can anyone tell me how you can tell a rock from a mineral just by looking at it?

a mineral is usual different elements in a mix, so all rocks are minerals. but if you mean just non-scientific "ooh, pretty rock" mineral, than some things you can look for are: transparent or shiny buts in the rock. if the entire rock is shiny or clear, or is it is an interesting color or make-up.
