DNA is the genetic material that offspring inherit from their parents.

Explanation:

In animals and higher plants, such as gymnosperms and angiosperms, gametes (sperm and egg cells) are produced by meiosis. These sex cells contain half of the DNA of the parent. The DNA and proteins called histones make up the the chromosomes. When the sperm fertilizes the egg, the chromosomes from each sex cell units to form the zygote, which is the first cell of the offspring.
