How does matter change from a solid to a liquid to a gas?

Bonds, Bonds, Bonds.
- Solid to a liquid
- Bonds in solid are broken by heat energy that is absorbed until that substance reaches its melting point (the temperature a substance becomes a liquid).
- Liquid to a gas
- For molecules of a liquid to evaporate, they must have sufficient kinetic energy (provided by heat) to overcome intermolecular forces holding the molecules of the liquid together
- Only then can the atoms float around, enjoying life as a gas
