How does natural selection occur?

Overpopulation leads to competition among the members of species , due to which there is decrease in the number of members of species , the one which adapts itself to the environment is said to be selected by the nature ( Survival of the Fittest ) and it will further reproduce to produced offsprings.
The one which fails to adapt itself will perish.
