Peripheral neuropathy is characterised by sensory nerve deterioration and reduced somatisensation increasing the risk of fall related injury.

Explanation:

Scientists have reported that individuals with peripheral neuropathy are not affected in either the visual or motor domains. Instead they show a marked decline in lower extremity somatisensation. The loss of somatisensation especially that of the plantar cutaneous sensation, is responsible for movement disturbances observed during weight bearing situations.

Those affected by peripheral neuropathy usually exhibit reduced physical activity, standing balance, mobility and independence. Such individuals are also at an increased risk of suffering falls. Walking is a critical component of physical function. Moreover, the majority of falls suffered by those affected by peripheral neuropathy occurs during situations in which individuals are walking.

It is therefore apparent that peripheral neuropathy negatively impacts one's ability to generate safe and effective walking patterns.
