These sacs fill with air with each inhalation.

The alveoli are surrounded by capillary beds. Both the alveoli and the capillary walls are one cell thick and allows for the diffusion of Oxygen #O_2# and Carbon Dioxide #CO_2# between the lung tissue and the blood.
