It's tells how long the earth erodes and weathers in contrast to the catastrophic changes that happens to any of the areas located on the Earth such as volcanoes, earthquakes, etc.

Uniformitarianism is the study of how scientists predict how long and how the Earth changes. It's a long and continous process still happening today, and usually happens near rushing bodies of water, breezes or winds, and weathering through age. Take for example, the pebbles you see in a stream. It's smooth and hard, but it takes over years to get it in the right condition due to the water smoothing over it.
