Look at a Periodic Table. For the first LONG Period, potassium, $Z = 19$, will be on your left, and $\text{krypton}$, $Z = 36$ will be on your right. There are thus $\text{18 columns}$, $\text{18 Groups}$ from left to right. $\text{Group 14}$, the carbon group, has FOUR valence electrons, that are normally involved in bonding.
