At the boundary of a singularity such as believed existed before the big bang time does not exist.

Explanation:

Time is affected by the presence of mass or gravity. The more mass, gravity, the slower the time intervals. At the boundary of a singularity time slows to zero. Within a black hole or the universe singularity there is no time. So time in the present universe began with the big bang.

Where the mass and energy that caused the big bang came from is unanswered. The present universe is increasing its rate of expansion. This means that the present universe will have an ending. The present universe will not recycle or reform itself so the present observed universe is not the source of the matter and energy that existed before the big bang.

What existed (if anything) before the big band is unknown. The state of the unknown if it was static or not is also unknown.
