Have you ever read an instruction manual or directions on how to assemble something? Those are examples of Procedure Text.

There are lots of ideas and details in the link above, but I'll stick with a couple of basic things:

  • Keep it in passive voice

If you are putting together shelves, the instructions will read something like this:

Apply glue to the joint between the shelf and the support

and not this:

You will then glue the shelf and support together at the joint

  • Be concise

When assembling the shelves, we don't need to know anything else about what we're doing. And so this works:

After applying the glue, wait 30 minutes or until dry

and this doesn't:

Depending on how much glue you use will impact the amount of time you need for it to dry. The relative humidity of the room you are working in will also impact it. And so use your best judgement as to when the glue is dry.
