Explanation:

On the western front the operations bogged down quite soon into a static trench warfare where both the contenders (Germans on one side and French and British on the other) fought a bloody war of attrition of attacks and counter attacks without any relevant gain of land or change in position.

On the Eastern front the military operations were more dynamic. The Germans manouvered with a high degree of expertise engaging the Russians in huge land battles (Tannenberg, for example) where, taking advance of the poor organization and leadership of the Russian army, they caused enormous losses to the enemy.
