# 3 5/12# miles

Explanation:

you need a common denominator first.

make both numbers improper fractions

#1 3/4# turns into #7/4#

#1 2/3# turns into #5/3#

your two numbers are now #7/4# and #5/3#
you need to add these numbers, meaning you need a common denominator. the smallest common number that both #4# and # 3# are factors of is the number #12#

to get #7/4# as a number over #12#, multiply both numerator and denominator by #3#, resulting in the fraction of #21/12#

#(7/4)*(3/3) = 21/12#

do the same thing to #5/3#, just multiply both numerator and denominator by #4# as to get a number over #12#

#(5/3) *(4/4) = 20/12#

your two numbers are now #21/12# and #20/12#

simply add these two like:

#(21/12)+(20/12)=41/12#

further simplify this into a mixed fraction

#41/12 = 3 5/12#
