When you inhale, you breath in oxygen which travels through the lungs to the alveoli/capillary for gas exchange. At the alveoli/capillary, red blood cells pick up the oxygen and take it to the heart, from there, it is taken to the muscles and various parts of the body. It then travels back to the heart as deoxygenated blood, then returns to the lungs to be expelled as carbon dioxide (a waste product).

In other words, when we inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downwards, and when we exhale, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards.
