I understand that hyperbole is the extreme definition of exaggeration but then again what is an exaggeration and how bad does it have to be to be extreme?

An exaggeration is when you make a statement better or worse than it actually is. For example, someone might say "it is raining cats and dogs" when in actuality, its just a light drizzle.
