If an individual's pancreatic islets have been destroyed, what will happen?

1 Answer

Type 1 diabetes mellitus

Explanation:

The beta cells of the islets of langerhans in the pancreas are responsible for making insulin.

Destruction of these beta cells results in type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus.

Insulin converts excess glucose in the blood to glycogen which can then be stored in the liver for later use.

When insulin stops being produced, the excess glucose builds up in the bloodstream. At one point, large amounts of glucose are secreted in the urine. That's a sign of diabetes.
