In the direction that the unbalanced (net) force is pointing or acting.

Explanation:

The equation (Newton’s second law, #F = m xx a#) is better written as #vecF = m xx veca# indicating that both force and accelration are vectors i.e. have both direction and magnitude and the direction of the accelartion vector is aligned with the unbalanced force.

Thus it is possible to travel forwards, whilst an unbalanced force accelerates you backwards e.g. on a bus approaching the traffic lights under braking.
