First, remove all of the terms from parenthesis. Be careful to handle the signs of each individual term correctly:

#f(x) - g(x) = 8x - 8 - 5x + 7#

Next, group like terms:

#f(x) - g(x) = 8x - 5x - 8 + 7#

Now, combine like terms:

#f(x) - g(x) = (8 - 5)x + (-8 + 7)#

#f(x) - g(x) = 3x + (-1)#

#f(x) - g(x) = 3x - 1#
