If the sun were growing bigger would that account for global warming?

Yes. As the Sun grows bigger, its luminosity will increase, so will heat energy from the Sun. The Earth's temperature will grow hotter and hotter.

The Sun cannot grow right now but astronomers have correctly predicted that the Sun increases its luminosity by 10% every 1 billion years. In about 5 billion years, the Earth will be burnt to a crisp. Rocks will melt and the atmosphere will be stripped off.
