Syntax is how a writer constructs their sentences, so anytime you are looking at sentence length or structure, particularly a trend or a shift in those constructions, you are looking at syntax.
Explanation:
Authors have a unique writing style, and it is always intentional. Do they have long flowing sentences with a lot of description? Do they have short punchy sentences? Is the writing filled with deliberate run-ons or fragments? These are all choices the author used to help convey their meaning.
