The systemic circuit of blood flow from the heart to the body begins in the Aorta, the largest artery in the body. Arteries branch to arterioles which branch to the smallest blood vessels the capillaries. Blood begins the return to the heart has capillaries branch to venules which branch to veins to the largest vein the Vena Cava which returns blood to the heart,

Arteriole blood carries oxygenated blood and uses the force of the heart pumping and the thicker musculature of the vessel to move the blood out to the body. Venous blood depends upon the pumping of the heart and valves within the veins to push the blood back to the heart.
Capillary walls are one cell thick and typically blood cells must line up single file through the capillaries providing the most efficient medium for exchange with the surrounding tissues.
