After 1945, the Soviet Union longed to become a world superpower in order to counteract the USA and their aura. There was an ideological conflict between those two nations. The USA defended political Liberalism and capitalism whereas the USSR had a socialistic economy and its ideology was communism.

The Soviet Union managed to become a superpower on the world stage thanks to the Atomic Bomb which they set up in 1947, i.e two years after the USA. The Soviet Union just like the USA organized an arms' race on nuclear arsenal and tried to have the greatest number of allies.
