New England

The poor soils keep the farms small producing mainly food crops instead of cash crops that could be sold.
The forest and good harbor encouraged ship building. The ship building encouraged the economy to turn to trade, fishing and whaling. ( sadly also the slave trade.)
The steep hills and resulting water ways made water wheels and industry possible in New England before the invention of the steam engine.
