Is "betrayer" a word?

My friends are having a debate over this question!
We could find the word on websites, but some of my friends insist on using traitor instead of betrayer.

"Betrayer" is a word; however, it is colloquial and shouldn't be used in formal or academic settings. "Traitor" is the more suitable word for both casual and formal settings.

Explanation:

As shown on the Merriam Webster Dictionary, "betrayer" is a noun meaning one who provides information about another person's wrongdoing, or one who betrays a trust or an allegiance.

So, "betrayer" is a word; however, it is colloquial and seldom used in comparison to "traitor."

This means that the word is generally used in casual writing or conversation, and should not be used in formal correspondence or academic works.

"Traitor" is the form most people use, and can be suitable for both casual and formal settings.
