# Is H_2 classified as an element?

$\text{My word.........}$
A chemical element is one of the hundred or so substances that CANNOT be chemically interconverted or broken down into simpler substances. Elemental hydrogen occurs as a bimolecular gas under normal conditions, i.e. ${H}_{2}$. Some chemists refer to it as $\text{dihydrogen}$ in order to emphasize its molecularity. Apart from the Noble Gases, all the elemental gases are bimolecular: i.e. $\text{dihydrogen}$; $\text{dinitrogen}$; ${X}_{2}$ etc.
