# Is pH a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration?

Aug 20, 2014

Yes, pH is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration.

See What is pH?.

If you know the pH, you can calculate the hydrogen ion concentration.

EXAMPLE

Calculate the hydrogen ion concentration for a solution with pH 2.30.

Solution

Since pH = -log[H⁺],

[H⁺] = ${10}^{- \text{pH}}$ mol/L.

So [H⁺] = ${10}^{-} 2.30$ mol/L = 5.0 × 10⁻³ mol/L
