Jason starts with 24 gumballs.

He gives #2/3# to Marcy - and so he gave away:

#24xx2/3=24/1xx2/3=cancel24^8/1xx2/cancel3=8xx2=16#

And so he has #24-16=8# left.

He then gave #3/4# away to David - and so he gave away:

#8xx3/4=8/1xx3/4=cancel8^2/1xx3/cancel4=2xx3=6#

And so he has #8-6=2# left.
