As per first condition: Jc is #5# years older than Sofia

#J=S+5#

#J-S=5\ ..........(1)#

As per second condition: In #12# years, Sofia will be thrice as old as Jc was #3# years ago

#S+12=3(J-3)#

#3J-S=21\ ..........(2)#

Subtracting (1) from (2) as follows

#3J-S-(J-S)=21-5#

setting #J=8# in (1), we get

#S=J-5#

#=8-5#
