The value of the expensive share is $39 each and the stock is worth $ 663.

Explanation:

Let the stocks with less value be of value $x each.

Given that : One is worth $9 more per share than the other.

So the value of other share = $x+9......this will be the one with greater value.

Given that : He has 17 shares of the more valuable stock and 42 shares of the other stock. That means,

He has 17 shares of value $x+9 and 42 shares of value $ x.

So, the stock of less value shares is worth =$42 x
and
the stock of more value shares is worth =17xx(x+9)
= $(17x +153)

Given that : His total assets in stocks is $1923. That means:

42x + 17x + 153 = 1923

=> 59x = 1923-153

=> 59x = 1770

=> x= 30 -----this is the value of the less expensive share.

So, the value of the more expensive share is x+9 =$ 39 each.

therefore The value of the more expensive stock = 17 xx 39 = $663
