In one perspective the war in Iraq is an extension of the war between Shia and Sunni Islamic traditions.

Explanation:

The present government of Iraq is dominated by Shia Muslims and greatly influenced by Shia dominated Iran. The ISSI rebels are Sunni and want a Sunni Caliphate.

The conflict between these two Islamic tradition goes back to at least 750 AD. The present war in Iraq is a continuation of the conflict.
