LBJ was unable to run for reelection since he had become extremely unpopular because of the escalation in Vietnam. His Vice President won the Democratic Party nomination and ran to carry on the escalation whereas candidates such as Robert Kennedy(who was shot in June 1968) and Eugene McCarthy had run on anti-war platforms.
