There are many reasons that the inability to fly would cause the death of a bird. The primary reason for this is that a bird is much more susceptible to predators on the ground. Hawks and other airborne predators would find it much easier to catch the bird while it is trapped on the ground and other predators, such as foxes and dogs, that do not normally hunt birds would go after it as well in the hopes of an easy meal.

I know you only asked for one answer, but it is my habit to post more than one reason or answer to a question. The other leading factor that would kill this bird is its inability to reach food. If this bird's diet is primarily supported by foods that are only found in trees, it will surely die of starvation if left by itself.
