It was known as the Boxer Rebellion as many of the movements supporters were trained in martial arts. It was an attempt by Chinese nationalists to rid China of foreign, colonial influence which they saw as exploiting China. It was also anti-Christian. It straddled the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
