Earthquakes are produced due to sudden release of energy on the plate boundaries. All plate boundaries (convergent, divergent and transform) causes earthquakes.
when two plates hit each other (convergent), the friction between the two plates and the force produced due to collision releases seismic energy which travels in all direction.
When two plates move away from each other (Divergent), the movement of the plates in addition to the eruption of lava on the ocean floor releases seismic energy which can only travel in rocks not on water.
When two plates slide past each other (Transform), the friction produced due to the sliding releases energy in form of seismic waves.
