Let $n =$ the smaller of the two integers, then $n + 1$ is the greater of the two integers. The sum of the two integers is:

$n + \left(n + 1\right) = 169$

Combine like terms:

$2 n + 1 = 169$

Subtract 1 from both sides:

$2 n = 168$

Divide both sides by 2:

$n = 84$

Then

$n + 1 = 85$

check:

$84 + 85 = 169$

$169 = 169 \leftarrow$ this checks
