What accounts for the fact that there are far more substances than are listed on the periodic table?

The Periodic Table lists 100 or so ELEMENTS....

Explanation:

...and elements are the primary building blocks of matter that CANNOT be converted to simpler substances... Of course DIFFERENT elements combine to give DIFFERENT chemical compounds....the which may contain 2 or more elements. Carbon and hydrogen alone can generate an impressive chemistry including a legion of chemical compounds.
