Water is the most powerful erosional agent on our planet, as well as an extremely effective transport agent. Mechanical weathering is different than chemical weathering (like oxidation), and is more effective at eroding on a large scale.

Along a beach, where salt water is beating away at the rocks and sand, there is a lot of erosion occurring. This happens at a very quick rate, geologically speaking. The water is also there to move the sediment way to another location, ready to be turned into another rock.
