Direct use of solar radiation for supplying building heat or electricity without additional energy input.

In contrast, “active solar” installations may use auxiliary motors for device or fluid motion within the solar power/heating system.

Examples of passive solar building are static thermal systems (windows, mass for heat storage, natural convection air movement), photo-voltaic solar electrical panels and use of landscaping to cool or heat parts of the building.
