The dark areas on the surface are known as Sunspots.

Explanation:

They are comparatively lesser temperature areas on the photo sphere of Sun..Due to magnetic activities these areas are about 1500 degree lesser than normal surface..These spots repeat in 11 year cycles.enter image source here
