Hydrogen and helium were the overwhelming majority of elements formed in the Big Bang itself. They have far outranked other elements ever since, with hydrogen coming first by a large margin.
Stars have been fusing the hydrogen and helium to make the heavier elements we all know and love, but that has affected only a small portion (up to now, anyway) of the primordial mixture of mostly hydrogen and helium.
