What are the two parts of the small intestine where nutrients are absorbed?
1 Answer
The Jejunum and the Ileum
Explanation:
The small intestine is approximately 16 feet long and has three main sections; the Duodenum, the Jejunum and the Ileum.
The Duodenum is the first loop of the small intestine. The food paste called chyme passes out of the stomach into the duodenum where the acidic chyme is made basic by the addition of bile from the gall bladder. Bile also helps to emulsify fats , beginning the breakdown of lipids. The pancreas also secretes pancreatic digestive enzymes to complete the breakdown of protein and continue the breakdown of fat.
The chyme continues to pass through the small intestine into the jejunum and then the ileum. The walls of the small intestine are lined with tiny fibers called villi. The villi have capillary beds that are important for the diffusion of the nutrients and wastes essential for the bodily functions.
