Reagan oversaw a significant increase in defence spending. This put huge pressure on the Soviet Union to match such levels, something which their economy could not do. In one sense it could be argued that the Cold War escalated with what was seen as aggressive policies. However it also contributed to the pressures which led to the break up of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
