The protons and neutrons are located in the atomic nucleus.

The following atom is a representation of a helium atom, which contains two protons in the nuclei of its atoms, and two electrons in the electron cloud surrounding the nucleus. The diagram is not to scale.

If an atom was the size of a football field, the nucleus would be the size of a pea in the center of the football field, and the electrons would be moving around the outer stands, and in between would be empty space.
