“Layers” of soil are built up over long periods of time, trapping organic and inorganic matter that was on the surface or in the atmosphere at the time. By studying the composition of soil layers we can see the changes that occurred on the planet over a large range of ages.

Everything from volcanic activity to some atmospheric gas components to the development of different flora and fauna can be deduced to some extent from the soil layer composition and entrapped fossils.
