What causes Cholera and what does the causative agent do that makes us lose so much fluid so fast with this disease?

It is caused by Vibrio cholerae, a bacteria.

Explanation:

Cholera is a highly infectious disease. In this disease, the digestive system of the person is affected . Generally it spread during summer. If not treated properly its mortality rate can go upto 70%. It can affect the people of any age.

Causes -

It is spread by the bacteria called Cholera vibrio. They enter the body of victim through contaminated food & water. Flies picks up the bacteria from the spit, vomit, & stools of infected person & leave them n uncovered food & water. A person get infected of this disease on consumption of such food.
The bacteria survive in dark places or dry saliva for many months . The moment they get favorable condition they multiply.

Sources of spread -

  • Water - Drinking water from polluted rivers & at public places where the bacteria of cholera are present.

  • Milk - Milkman adds water to milk & if that water is polluted food the milk also gets polluted.

  • Food- polluted food when taken can cause Cholera

  • Flies

  • Human- a person in contact with infected person also gets this infection.

Incubation period is from 1-2 hrs to 5 days.

Symptoms -

  • loose motions

  • Vomitting

  • Pain in legs

  • Dry tongue

  • Dehydration

  • less urine formation

  • Patient suffers from low blood pressure

Prevention & Cure -

  • Patient should be kept in separate room.

  • Cholera vaccines should be given to patient.

  • Boiled water should be given to patient.

  • Food should be covered.

  • ors should be given to patient in every 1-2 hrs.

  • patient should be given full rest.

  • patient should be kept warm.
